IQ tests are almost never used in Russia. But the term itself has become widely known.

Most people know that IQ (read "IQ") is a measure of the strength of human intelligence. But what does it mean and how is it calculated?

It all started with the French psychologist Alfred Binet in 1905. He worked with mentally retarded youth and, together with his colleague Theodor Simon, developed a method for measuring the psychological age of young people, which, in the case of their charges, differed from biological age.

Then, in 1912, the German psychologist William Stern developed a method for determining the ratio of intellectual age to biological age. He found that this ratio remained virtually unchanged in the process of growing children.

This ratio became known as the “Intelligence Quotient” or IQ (Intelligence Quotient). It is calculated by the formula:

100 x (intellectual age/biological age).

So, if you are 30 years old, but your IQ is 25 years old, your IQ would be: 100 x 25/30 = 83.

Distribution of IQ among the population (on the vertical axis - % of the population with iq indicated on the horizontal axis

It is clear that according to this method, the average IQ for the entire population will be 100. The individual IQ of a person shows how much a person is above or below the average intellectual level of his age.

Thus, to conduct tests, statistics are first collected on the performance of these tests on a large number of people. Then the performance of each newly tested person is compared with the average performance of people who have previously passed the tests.

Since in the classical version of the tests, the results are compared with the same audience as that of the test subject by age, IQ also indicates the rate of development of intelligence.

Intelligence tests are designed to test all areas of your brain: calculations, pattern recognition, sequence continuation, logic, word processing, abstraction, and so on. The result obtained is compared with the norm.

There are various interpretations of the obtained results.

80% of the population has an IQ in the 80-120 range.

There are quite a few high IQ communities around the world. For example, Mensa, which has members from over 100 countries, requires an IQ of at least 132 for its members.

In order to get into the Olympic Society (Olympiq Society) you need an IQ of 180. The community website indicates that it has only 14 members.

It is believed that the results of IQ tests are good at determining the ability of people, and are good predictors of their prospects for difficult work. Most professors have an IQ of one hundred and thirty, which puts them in the top 3% of the population in terms of intellectual ability.

Although IQ tests are not infallible, their results are a useful indicator. As a rule, the IQ indicator remains unchanged throughout life.

Interestingly, a study in Scotland in the 1950s and 1960s of more than 11,000 people showed a relationship between IQ scores and morbidity, as well as life expectancy.

A pattern has been revealed that a person with a lower IQ has an average life expectancy lower than a person with a higher IQ.

A lower IQ means a higher chance of developing Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia.

What was Einstein's iq?

Albert Einstein never took a test to change the level of his IQ. Of course, there is no doubt that the famous physicist could show a high result. Most likely it would be in the region of 200, that is, at the level of the best achievements of celebrities.

Intelligence quotient (eng. IQ - intelligence quotient) - a quantitative assessment of the level of intelligence of a person: the level of intelligence relative to the level of intelligence of an average person of the same age. It is determined using special tests. IQ tests are designed to assess mental abilities, not the level of knowledge (erudition). The IQ is an attempt to measure the general intelligence factor (Wikipedia).

The IQ test lasts 30 minutes and contains 40 simple questions!

When performing the test, you can not use paper, a calculator, a pen, a cheat sheet, the Internet and friend's tips :)
IQ tests are designed so that the results are described by a normal distribution with an average IQ of 100 and such a spread that 50% of people have an IQ between 90 and 110, and 25% each below 90 and above 110. The average IQ of American university graduates is 115, excellent students - 135-140. An IQ value of less than 70 often qualifies as mentally retarded.

The IQ was measured by 115,145 people.

Intelligence quotient (IQ) - a comparative assessment of the level of development of the interviewed person. Otherwise, it is the level of intelligence in relation to the level of development of the average person of the same age. Typically, the intelligence quotient (IQ) is determined by a psychologist on the basis of special tests. Most IQ tests are designed to assess a person's ability to solve problems logically. You should not be mistaken and consider the IQ test as a test to determine the level of knowledge (erudition). IQ is just an attempt by psychologists to estimate the factor of general intelligence.

The test consists of 50 questions and lasts 40 minutes. Here you can take an IQ test (intelligence test) for free (without SMS and without registration)!

When performing the test, you can not use paper, a calculator, a pen, a cheat sheet, the Internet and friend's tips. Once a question has been answered, it cannot be answered again. After the time has elapsed, the test will automatically end. IQ tests are designed so that the results are normally distributed with an average IQ of 100 and such that 50% of people have an IQ between 90 and 110, and 25% each have an IQ below 90 and above 110. The average IQ of university graduates is 115; - 135-140. An IQ value of less than 70 often qualifies as mentally retarded.

Good day, dear readers! Each of us is unique, knows a lot and knows a lot. Scientists have decided that the amount of what we can easily measure. So there was a term, not by hearsay known to us as IQ.

Someone boasts of the figure obtained as a result of testing and compares it with the scores of famous personalities. Someone is familiar with this abbreviation only from afar and has no idea at all what an IQ test is and what it consists of.

And really, who suddenly decided that we can be compared with each other in mind with the help of some points? How many of them do you need to be “ahead of the rest of the planet” and indeed, is it possible to measure the brain?

Lesson plan:

How and who began to measure intelligence?

They tried to measure human intelligence back in the 30s of the last century, and for this, scientists did not conduct any kind of experiments! The regularity between the nerves and the reaction of the body was searched for, the dependence of the mind on the size of the brain was calculated, the mental abilities of parents and children were compared, and the influence on the intellect of social origin and the number of years was determined.

Wilhelm Stern from Germany in 1912 first mentioned the concept of "intelligence quotient" (Intelligence Quotient) as a quantitative assessment of mental development. In his calculations, this was the quotient of dividing mental age by the chronological number of years. If everything is clear with chronological age, then I will explain what mental means.

Back in 1905, there was a series of tests for children called the Binet-Simon scale, which gave tasks for the age of 3-13 years, believing that intellectual development occurs during biological maturation, independent of learning. According to the success of the tests performed, the scale determined the same mental age.

Later, the set of tests was improved, the age limits were extended to 18 years and, for comparison, they began to use the statistical norm. But most importantly, the German scientist Stern assured everyone that the minds of children at different ages cannot be the same, and therefore began to look for that particular quotient, multiplying the number obtained from dividing two ages by a hundred.

The result of this mathematical calculation is nothing but modern IQ. And tasks in tests for children began to be grouped by difficulty in accordance with the number of years.

Today, quantifying a person's mind compared to the average person of the same age has become especially popular. It is used by many well-known companies when they recruit employees to their staff. There are tests for children, helping educators to determine the abilities of students.

Although the IQ test is not an exam, it essentially reveals ingenuity and erudition, which is directly associated with intelligence and thereby determines whether the applicant can cope with the tasks assigned to him.

How are IQ tests arranged?

Today there are no uniform standards for IQ tests. At first, these tasks for determining the level of intelligence included only lexical exercises, but today they can find tasks for non-arithmetic counts, meet logical series, they offer to complete geometric shapes, ask to identify fragments and remember any facts, and also to manipulate words.

They may consist of a different number of questions, the answers to which must be given in a certain time.

Each test contains tasks of increasing difficulty and requires working memory, creativity and out-of-the-box thinking. Moreover, they should be separated by age. This explains why a first-grader and a university graduate can have exactly the same IQ test results.

The average number of points for an ordinary inhabitant of the planet is 100 units. Half of the solved tasks correspond to this indicator. Accordingly, the maximum that can be scored is 200.

Interestingly, tests can not only evaluate your mind, but also show a predisposition to a way of thinking. And a low level, for example, in logic or verbal perception, does not mean at all that you are a complete layman. As scientists say, this is only your weak point and a large reserve, a gap in which you need to train.

There are several IQ tests. I will give examples of the most famous.

Wexler's assignments

They diagnose general intelligence in terms of verbal and non-verbal mental development. Each group has 10-30 questions. Among the verbal - general concepts, the search for similarities, digital series. In non-verbal - encryption, search for missing elements, sequence, folding figures.

Often these tests are used to determine neuropsychiatric pathologies.

Amthauer testing

It is intended primarily for professional psychodiagnostics, determining the volitional and emotional qualities, interests and needs of an audience of 12 and older, but is more often used for the age category of 35-40 years. It involves verbal, mathematical, spatial and mnemonic (associated with memorization and reproduction) tasks.

The method consists of 9 sections, each with 16-20 timed tasks. At the same time, samples of the algorithm of actions are even given, according to which it will be necessary to decide. The test results will be profiles, for example, type M - humanities, type U - techies, and so on.

Raven's Progressive Matrices Test

It is a whole battery of tasks for analyzing the level of intelligence through visual thinking and analogy for different ages and educations, nationalities and genders. In it, you need to organize sequences of geometric shapes, which become more complicated over and over again, revealing patterns.

This technique is considered one of the purest forms of measuring general intelligence.

The method of a psychologist from England, Hans Eysenck

This is the most popular IQ test. It is according to him that today ordinary people aged 18 to 50 with an education not lower than average determine the very cherished scores that craftsmen can boast of completing tasks.

In total, there are eight of its options, all of them are intended for a general assessment of the level of mental development. The first five are tasks for general skills, the next three assess verbal, mathematical and visual abilities. At the same time, both verbal and arithmetic tasks are equally given, therefore both techies and humanities are placed on an equal footing.

How to read IQ scores?

According to the results of testing according to Eysenck, you can classify yourself as one of the smart groups. I can’t say with exact certainty that this is true, since Eysenck’s tests are often criticized, but the statistics of scientists fix several levels.

  • So, the standards, and this is 50% of the inhabitants of the planet, get their average 90-110 points. This is enough to pass exams and enter universities, working in the future in the middle management.
  • There are those who have an IQ value above the average:

111-120 makes it possible to study in higher educational institutions without straining, and if you have the proper diligence, you can get a good job after studying, there are about 12% of them,

121-130 - a good opportunity to succeed in leadership and creativity, there are about 6% of them,

131-140 is already an extremely high rate, there are no more than 3% of such people, they are successful in specific areas, they can be scientists and do research,

those whose indicators go off scale over 140 develop not only themselves, they move science and knowledge forward. By the way, they are only 0.2%.

  • There are those whose IQ values do not reach the required average level:

81-90 points allow you to get a secondary education and get a good job where more than intellectual, but physical labor is required, this is about 10% of the population,

71-80 make it possible to cope with elementary school and college, this is also 10% of all of us put together,

51-70 points are received by those who, with efforts, are able to receive a special education, but with this IQ indicators are already starting to talk about mental retardation, there are about 7% of such people,

below 50 get people who are unable to learn, suffering from some kind of mental illness.

I offer you for free take an online IQ test here and find out your perspectives. However, do not cycle on these numbers! As the recent criticisms of many science professors have argued, these tests should not be blindly trusted. After all, this is just a predisposition to a certain type of tasks that you can train to solve, as well as half a lottery.

Good luck, and whoever is braver, post the results. It would be interesting!
