Memorial Complex " Eternal flame» located in the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin, near the Mikhailo-Arkhangelsky Cathedral.

In 1964, the City Executive Committee of the city of Gorky decided: "On the 20th anniversary of the Victory, create a memorial complex in honor of the Gorky people who died during the Great Patriotic War."

The opening of the memorial took place on May 8, 1965 on the eve of the celebration of the 20th anniversary of the Victory Day. The memorial complex includes the Eternal Flame and a granite stele. The words are engraved on the stele: Eternal memory to the people of Gorky who fell in the battles for the freedom and independence of our Motherland . On the reverse side are engraved surnames - Gorkovchan - Geroev Soviet Union dead at the front.

On the side of the stele, verses by the poet V. Polovinkin are engraved:

May 9, 1970 near the complex was installed tank T-34 as a symbol of the labor contribution of Gorky residents to the common Victory.

Since 1980, a guard of honor has been organized by the fire, consisting of schoolchildren.

Story

The monument - the boat "To the sailors - the defenders of the motherland" was brought from the city of Kerch in memory of the dead sailors Black Sea Fleet, on the initiative of a participant in the war - midshipman Galiyev Mikhal Romanovich. For the first time, the anniversary of the Victory was widely and solemnly celebrated in May 1965, 20 years after the end of the Great Patriotic War. A number of memorial complexes were opened for this event in the country. Our city was no exception - in the square to them. Minin in the Kremlin, next to the obelisk to K. Minin and D. Pozharsky, at the Clock Tower, a memorial complex was opened in memory of those Gorky people who gave their lives defending the Fatherland.

The implemented version of the memorial complex dedicated to the soldiers - Gorky residents who died during the war of 1941-1945, was made in 1964 according to a project selected as a result of a competition. Funds for its construction were transferred by the enterprises of the city. The opening took place on May 9, 1965.

In the State Archive of Special Documentation Nizhny Novgorod region in the documents of the fund of the design institute for civil engineering, planning and development of cities "Gorkovgrazhdanproekt" there is a complete set of technical documentation for the memorial complex and the reconstruction of the park named after. Minin, and in the fund of the city department of culture - a passport for a historical and architectural monument. The authors of the memorial complex are architects: S.A. Timofeev, B.S. The memorial complex has a frontal composition stretching along the upper edge of the slope in the western part of the Kremlin. In honor of the immortality and glory of the warriors, the Eternal Flame burns. Near the main (high) stele, lined with granite slabs. On it, the figures of two soldiers leading the battle are imprinted with a chisel, and the dates are 1941-1945. On the other side of this stele, the words “Eternal memory to the Gorky people who fell in the battles for the freedom and independence of our Motherland” are engraved, and next to it are the names of the Gorky people - Heroes of the Soviet Union who died at the front. On the side stele are carved in granite the names of the Gorky residents, who repeated the exploits of Alexander Matrosov and Nikolai Gastello, enrolled forever in the lists of military units, and the poems of the poet V. Polovinkin, full of solemnity and sorrow:

Later (May 9, 1970), the T-34 tank, built during the war at the Sormovo plant, entered the memorial complex as a symbol of the labor contribution of the Gorky people to the achievement of the Victory. And on June 21, 1995, at the request of tank veterans, the text was engraved on its granite pedestal: “The T-34 tank was built at the Krasnoye Sormovo plant.” April 13, 1945 one of the first to liberate the city of Vienna.

In 1976, the letters of the main stele with the names of the heroes were gilded, in 1978, the letters of the low stele, where verses were carved.

By Decree of the Council of Ministers of the RSFSR No. 624 of December 4, 1974, the memorial complex was taken under state protection. The complex has the status of a historical and architectural monument of republican significance.

Story

Since 1981, the memorial complex included a monument with a boat and an eternal flame. The patrol boat was delivered by railway from Kerch. Specially invited veterans participating in the battles on Malaya Zemlya performed at the opening ceremony of the complex. On the occasion of the 65th anniversary of the Victory, the memorial complex was reconstructed and supplemented military equipment and memorial slabs and a granite wall.

Today, commemorative events are held at the Eternal Flame of Glory memorial, veterans are honored, wreaths are laid in memory of the fallen residents of Salavat.
