No. 262725 Answer from the Russian language help service This word can act as a short adjective or as a short participle, which is responsible for the differences in spelling. No. 213632 Answer from the Russian language help service This is true (if there are no dependent words): will be in demand. ???

Writing a short form of a word in demand presents a spelling problem. The rules of 1956 and after them D. E. Rosenthal proposed writing short participles with one n, and the verbal adjectives associated with them have two. Yes, one and two n Participles and adjectives differ in phrases: She was raised by a distant relative - She has good manners, she is well-mannered; She is spoiled by good conditions - She is capricious and spoiled. Adjectives differ from participles in that they have a qualitative meaning and can form a comparative degree. There are other indicators of “involvement” and “ adjectives» , but these are the ones indicated in spelling books.

If you follow these recommendations, the word in demand can be classified as an adjective in many contexts. It often has a qualitative meaning “necessary, timely” and at the same time forms a comparative degree: these products are more in demand than others. From the above rule it follows that in in demand can be an adjective and in its short forms you need to write two n.

However, the practice of writing is different: it is absolutely dominated by writing with one n. Moreover, this spelling corresponds to the recommendations of the Russian Spelling Dictionary of the Russian Academy of Sciences. It turns out that with two n this form is not written.

We can guess what the dictionary fixation with one n. In explanatory dictionaries the word in demand not marked as an adjective, unlike educated, spoiled and other verbal adjectives that have long existed in the Russian language. According to our observations, the meaning “necessary, timely” appeared in the word in demand recently. And dictionaries always lag a little behind the development of the language. The adjective, not recorded in explanatory dictionaries, was not included in the spelling dictionary.

But why doesn't spelling with two apply? n(according to the rule!) in writing practice? The fact is that writers violate the rule about short participles and adjectives in many other cases. And the number of spellings that do not comply with the rules is so great that it is time to wonder whether this does not mean that the rule itself does not correspond to the norm of writing. Maybe the norm has become to write adjectives with one n and only a few pairs like brought upwell-mannered differ even more or less consistently. There is also reason to believe that this is not a change in the norm at all, but that it was so before. Even D. E. Rosenthal noted in his most complete reference books that there are verbal adjectives that are written with one n, and in some cases the choice n And nn is conditioned syntactically: if there is an addition, it is written n, and in its absence – nn.

This problem has not gone unnoticed by scientists. The rule in the 2006 full academic reference book was formulated somewhat differently than in the 1956 code and in D. E. Rosenthal: “ Short forms of adjectives in-ny are written with one n, if these adjectives require dependent words and do not have a comparative form. Examples: attached to someone"attached" She is very attached to him; full of something"full, imbued" The soul is filled with sadness; heard about something"knowledgeable" We've heard a lot about his tricks » .

At the same time, in “ Russian spelling dictionary» for verbal adjectives it is indicated that if there is an object they are written withn, and in the absence- With nn,For example: her interests are limited to home and children And our capabilities are limited, she is self-confident and limited(see dictionary entry for the wordlimited) .

This is such a difficult situation. Until the rule is changed, we recommend writing in accordance with it, although we sometimes hesitate. However, it must be recognized that at the moment neither writing n, nor writing nn in short adjective forms in demand cannot be considered an error.

Good afternoon. Is there a plural form for the word "sun". After all, we don’t say “suns,” but we can ask “How many suns?” A similar question about the word "moon".
Sincerely, T. Khachaturova

Russian help desk response

Words Sun And moon have plural forms, but these forms are limited in use. Of course, pluralization is not possible when using words Sun And Moon as astronomical terms meaning, respectively, “the central body of the solar system” and “the natural satellite of the Earth”: there is one such Sun and one such Moon. They are written with capital letters and are used only in the singular.

However, the word Sun used in the plural to mean “the central body of other planetary systems”, for example: flight to distant suns, as well as in the individual author’s context (in Mayakovsky: at one hundred and forty suns the sunset glowed). Paradigm plural numbers: suns, suns, suns, suns, suns, about suns.

Word moon used in the plural meaning “satellite of any planet”, for example: two moons of Mars; how many moons does Neptune have?

The prestige of education in the modern world is questionable, although it is precisely this that allows us to answer the question: what kind of concept is “ignorant”? By the way, fun fact: according to statistics, Russia is the most educated country, if you take into account the percentage of people with higher education. Interesting, right? Now let's get down to business.

Meaning

““Ignorant” is a person of little culture, uneducated,” says the explanatory dictionary. For example, a person who still believes that the earth is flat can, without any doubt, claim this unpleasant characteristic. Ignorance itself is, of course, bad. But there are people (and quite a lot) who are even proud of it. They don’t know, but it doesn’t interfere with their lives at all.

Let's say this is true. What if these same people have children, how will they teach their offspring to dream of more? It’s bad when a person has little scientific, philosophical or psychological knowledge, but it’s even worse when he doesn’t want to learn. The darkness he promotes can harm his family and friends, and his children will adopt it and understand that this type of behavior is the only possible one. If "ignorant" is the attitude, then there is little that can be done to change one's mind.

Ignorant and ignorant

There are different types of ignorance, but, whatever one may say, the adjective is the same.

Anyone who does not know how to behave at a table in decent company will be called ignorant. Sometimes this is due to differences in acceptable behavior in different societies. African tribes have some manners, Europeans have others. It’s not without reason that when people find themselves in a foreign social community, they experience culture shock. But eating with your hands in almost any European country is a sign of bad taste. Therefore, if you see a person who neglects cutlery, do not doubt that this is an ignorant person. You could say...

Another type of ignorance is lack of education. And here one classic example suggests itself. Remember the episode of the novel by M.A. Bulgakova, when she tells the Master about the meeting with the professor at the Patriarch’s, and the Master, having listened and enlightened Ivan, asks, knowing the answer in advance: “I’m not mistaken, are you an ignorant person?” And here this characteristic is of a slightly different kind. It cannot be said that the Master had time to appreciate the poet’s manners. But he understood one thing for sure: Ivan was unfamiliar with demonology and had not even read Faust, that is, he lacked knowledge in a certain area. Such an ignorant literary worker is sad, but, as the reader remembers, the poet will completely change.

Sherlock Holmes, or There is no limit to perfection

It’s a strange thing, but each of us can say, like Socrates: “I only know that I know nothing.” Many great minds have interpreted these words. But it seems that the ordinary unknowability of the world is encrypted in them. The wider the area of a person’s knowledge, the greater the area of his ignorance, and nothing can be done about it. Each of us is both a specialist and a layman rolled into one.

Remember the wonderful episode of the Soviet film “Acquaintance”: the first episode of the film about Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson. There is a scene when the famous detective admits to his complete ignorance in terms of literary, philosophical knowledge, he does not even know that the Earth revolves around the Sun, but he is well versed in chemistry and can distinguish different types of dirt from different streets of London.

No one would dare call the detective a fool, yes, he missed a lot in terms of general knowledge, but in his field he is a genius! His concept can be called "controlled or intelligent ignorance." The detective doesn't do anything special, he just knows exactly what he needs and what he doesn't. And he is indifferent to the laurels of an erudite. In fact, Holmes' case is not unique, for this is the fate of every specialist.
