“You are putting Russia on its hind legs”

From the book Children (May 2007) author Russian life magazine

“You are putting Russia on its hind legs.” He has the eye of a caretaker. He sees where there is an overuse of paper clips, where there is an extra hole punch that was not included in the estimate. But this same supply manager calmly walks past leaking pipes, cold radiators and dilapidated roofs, being sure that building anew is cheaper than patching up,

In life there are people who show a strong protest against something through their behavior. Such disagreement, expressed by its entire appearance, is often found in animals, especially horses. They stand on their hind legs and assume a vertical position, thereby demonstrating protest. In such cases they say: “Rises on its hind legs!” Where did this expression come from, and how to deal with such a rebel?

Meaning

Typically, behavior that expresses resistance is somehow related to self-defense. The phrase “Rises on its hind legs!” is often associated with it.

However, the word “rack” itself is a term that denoted an instrument of punishment and torture. It was used in Rus' and Europe from the 14th to the 18th centuries. This is a terrible weapon. It was intended to stretch the body of the person being punished. In this case, as a rule, his ligaments were torn. In Europe, it happened that the rack was equipped with additional spikes. In Rus' the word meant a deck. They said this: “Put the accused on the rack.”

Nowadays they use the expression “to rear up.” This means sharply resisting, protesting, rocking the boat, disagreeing. To rise up means to object, to resist, to take up arms, to express sharp irritation, to behave defiantly, while straightening up and standing on your feet. And then, when in the XIV-XVIII centuries they said “put on the rack”, which means to punish with the help of an appropriate instrument of torture.

Punishment

There was another type of punishment - on the stake. The accused was hung from a pole with his arms twisted behind his back, and a weight was tied to his legs. With this method of punishment, the unfortunate man's arms were pulled out of their sockets. The suspended man was beaten with a whip, could be set on fire, or had his ribs broken. There was no difference between male and female except for the ribs. They were not broken for women. Basically, in the Russian Empire, the rack is a weapon for punishing thieves.

But this type of punishment was not always applied everywhere. For example, in the agreement between Riga and Smolensk, dating back to the 13th century, it was said that the Rusyns should be given bail or put on iron, and not on the rack. But the Pskov court charter said that the rack is a punishment for those who get into court or hit the doorkeeper.

Horses protest

Among people involved in horse breeding, dressage, and equestrian sports, you can often come across the expression “the horse has stood up on an oak tree.” This is the same as rearing or holding a candle. The reasons for this behavior of a horse can be various circumstances. If a horse rears up and the rider sits on it, then most likely this is a response to rough treatment. Perhaps the rider is inexperienced and does not handle the reins skillfully. Then the horse, wanting to get rid of the sensations of pain, does not obey and refuses to move forward. At the same time, she abruptly stands on her hind legs and turns in a direction that is convenient for her.

It happens that a horse simply plays from an excess of energy. This behavior is typical of young, unbroken individuals. The behavior of a horse standing on a candle shows a discrepancy between the strong excitement of the horse's nervous system and the actions of the rider restraining it.

It happens that a horse rears up while in the pasture, in the levada, or on the line. Then this speaks of aggression, the desire to attack, to strike with a hoof. But not only. Horses often play like this, expressing a good mood, pouring out an excess of energy. To distinguish between these conditions, look at the legs and hooves. If the legs are straightened and the hooves are open and pointing forward, this is a readiness to strike. If the hooves point inward and the legs are bent, it's game. But even at such a moment you should not approach the horse. Almost everyone knows what a horse looks like on its hind legs (the photo can be seen below).

How to handle a horse that has stood on a candle?

If the rider is on a horse, and it rears up, then it must be forced to lower itself onto all its legs. And it doesn’t matter for what reason this happened. If the horse under you is already rearing, you need to do the following:

  • To do this, loosen the reins until they sag, but under no circumstances drop them!
  • The weight of your body must be transferred forward, so the horse will be forced to lower itself. Under no circumstances should you lean back! This way you can throw the horse onto its back and fall yourself, injuring your spine. If a fall cannot be avoided, you need to try to push off from the horse so as to fall away from it. Otherwise, it may injure the rider if it falls.
  • Perhaps there are sharp irritants nearby, then you need to immediately move to the side.
  • When on all legs, it must be energetically sent forward. Working with the reins should be softened.

If the horse disobeys and he wants to turn in a different direction, then you need to suddenly lie down on his neck and prevent him from turning his head. To do this, you need to slightly tighten the outside rein, just enough to prevent her from turning her head. You must act carefully, without over-tightening the reins. It is important to know that if she turns around, she can gallop suddenly.
