To understand the complex world of a writer, poet, playwright, one must turn to the era in which he lived and worked.

William Shakespeare is a great English poet and playwright of the Renaissance. The time in which Shakespeare lived and worked was a turning point in the history of Western Europe. Shakespeare was a contemporary of the great era called the Renaissance. The foundations of feudal society were collapsing, they were undermined by a new class - the bourgeoisie, many ingrained ideas about life were becoming a thing of the past, old ideals were collapsing and new ones arose. In England, more intensively than anywhere else in Europe, the capitalist mode of production took shape. It was a period of rapid growth of wealth and at the same time widespread poverty. People appeared in society who sought to rethink life and the purpose of man. A new humanistic worldview emerged, which affirmed the greatness, beauty and endless possibilities of man. Like other humanists, Shakespeare believed that the best principles in the world and in man would ultimately triumph. Life, however, took a different path. The long three-century journey of the Italian humanist in England fits within the framework of one 16th century. For a moment, refreshing the greatness of the human spirit, the joy of discovery and knowledge of the world, the great Renaissance swept over the country, flashed and went out. Thomas More opens the era of the English Renaissance, and Shakespeare closes it.
Little information has been preserved about the life of the great playwright, since in the eyes of his contemporaries he was by no means such a great man as subsequent generations recognized him. His life and work are surrounded by legends. Many scholars have collected bits and pieces of data about Shakespeare, speculated, tested hypotheses, and filled in gaps in his biography. The documents that were found relate mainly to the playwright’s property affairs, but there is more detailed information about his theatrical activities.
Shakespeare was born in the small provincial town of Stratford, located on the Avon River. Shakespeare's father was a wealthy artisan and merchant. Shakespeare spent his childhood among ordinary people, deeply mastering the living folk language. The future playwright received his primary education at Stratford Grammar School, where the main subject of study was ancient languages. Here Shakespeare learned Latin and Ancient Greek. This was the end of his official education, since from the age of fourteen he was forced to help his father in business. However, Shakespeare became a very educated person for his time, constantly engaged in self-education, replenishing his missing knowledge by reading books. At the age of eighteen, Shakespeare married, and three or four years later he went to London in search of work. His father by this time had experienced serious everyday troubles, lost his money and the honorable position that he had occupied for some time in Stratford.
In London, Shakespeare changed several professions and only in 1594 finally linked his fate with the theater. He entered into the acting partnership of his famous fellow countryman, the talented actor Burbage. The troupe called themselves "The Lord Chamberlain's Men." In 1599, Burbage opened the Globe Theater, which became the best among six London theaters. The success of the theater largely depended on its repertoire, which was created by Shakespeare, who had been interested in literary activity for several years. Shakespeare's early experiments were alterations and "renewal" of existing plots; later he moved on to creating his own works. In the troupe, Shakespeare was more valued as a playwright than as an actor, although he remained on stage until he was forty years old. In 1612, Shakespeare left the theater and returned to Stratford, where he lived until his death. The last plays written by Shakespeare for his troupe date back to 1612 - 1613. After this, the playwright fell silent. Researchers suggest that Shek-pir was ill for the last four years of his life. The great playwright died at the age of 52 and was buried under the altar of the St. Trinity in their hometown.
Shakespeare's legacy consists of 154 sonnets, several short poems, poetic cycles and 37 plays. His work is a clear example of the flourishing and crisis of humanistic ideology. The first decade of his work was imbued with an optimistic belief in the solution of social contradictions; the next period is filled with tragedy, since before Shakespeare’s eyes the most important ideal collapsed - the belief in the endless improvement of man; In the last period, the playwright is trying to find a way out of the world of tragic contradictions in his own world of romantic dramas. The early period of Shakespeare's work (1590-1600) was marked by hopes for renewal. This was the time of writing historical chronicles. (“Richard II”, “Richard III”, “Henry IV”, “Henry V”, “Henry VI”, etc.) and comedies (“The Taming of the Shrew”, “The Merchant of Venice”, “The Merry Wives of Windsor”, “ Twelfth Night”, etc.) The bright, cheerful mood of comedies, the belief in the triumph of the best principles in the state life of historical chronicles are combined in this period of creativity. The only tragedy of this period, Romeo and Juliet (1595), is imbued with the light of romantic love and deep lyricism. The death of the main characters does not make this tragedy hopeless.
Romeo and Juliet grew up and live in an atmosphere of centuries-old enmity between their families, every trifle serves as a reason for clashes. Despite this, the love of two beautiful young creatures was born and blossomed, who despise bloody feuds, who are not afraid of death, but are afraid of life without a loved one. The heroes die, but over their bodies there is a reconciliation between the warring families of Montagues and Capulets. Love wins a moral victory over the world of evil.
In the second period of his work (1601-1608), which can be called “tragic,” Shakespeare tries to resolve the issues of the contradictory nature of man, who can rise to the greatest spiritual heights and descend to crime. The source of the tragic is the sharp contradiction between humanistic ideals and the new reality with its cult of power and gold. The famous tragedies Hamlet, Othello, Macbeth and King Lear were created during this period.
In the last years of his creative work (1609-1613), Shakespeare's plays took on a different character. The playwright begins to look for a way out of the insoluble conflicts of time in a fairy tale, in a utopia. In Shakespeare's last plays: Pericles, Cymbilene, The Tempest, The Winter's Tale, the world is full of evil, but good miraculously always triumphs.
Shakespeare's plays, created about four centuries ago, still live, stunning the imagination of audiences. The best theaters in the world and outstanding actors consider it a great honor to stage and perform a Shakespeare play.

We will become familiar with the genre of tragedy in ninth grade. As we know, tragedy usually ends with the death of heroes. We will also try to figure out why Romeo and Juliet die. The death was due to two reasons. The first objective is the ancient enmity of the Montague and Capulet families. This feud is condemned by the residents of Verona, no one even remembers why it started, but there are always evil people who take pleasure in stirring up quarrels again. The second reason is related to the characters of the lovers themselves. They are too young, both are true Italians but in temperament: they are impetuous, impatient, hot-tempered, prone to hasty decisions and actions, especially Romeo. Therefore, the action develops quickly: in just five days, the young heroes meet secretly from their parents and secretly get married. Romeo is immediately forced to immediately flee from Verona, since he killed Juliet’s relative in Tybalt’s battle, killing him in revenge for the death of his friend Mercutio. Friar Lorenzo, who helps the lovers, plunges Juliet into a temporary stupor, outwardly similar to death, in order to save her from her hated marriage with the nobleman Paris. Romeo, not knowing the truth, kills himself, and after him, Juliet also commits suicide, waking up in the crypt. Over the lovers' graves, the Montagues and Capulets reconcile.
This is the short plot of the tragedy.
But we must keep in mind that this is not a real story of two young people, but rather conventional poetic images of heroes, that is, as in any work of art, there is artistic fiction. But the author created the work so masterfully that we perceive them as living real people.
Romeo and Juliet is a tragedy. The confrontation between the Montagues and the Capulets is not a conflict of tragedy, it is only an occasion, the basis of the conflict (a clash of opposition between parties, opinions, forces, serious disagreements, a heated dispute). Warring houses are on one side, lovers are on the other.
